MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES contains Mesalazine which belongs to the group of medicines called Salicylates. MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES is used to treat inflammation of gut caused by conditions such as ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease) in affected individuals.
MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES is also used to treat ulcerative proctitis which occurs due to inflammation of rectal mucosa in affected individuals.
MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Mesalamine, salicylates (such as acetylsalisylic acid), and/or sulphasalazine. It is also not recommended for use in patients with serious kidney and liver disease.
Before using [GBKEYWORD], inform your doctor if you have any medical condition that makes you prone to bleed, and/or having lung problems (such as asthma), mild to moderate kidney/liver problems.
MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary. It is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) and is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) after consulting the doctor.
The most common side effects of using MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES are abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, headache, rectal discomfort, and/or irritation at the site of application. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsen.
USES OF MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES
- Treats inflammation of the gut caused by conditions such as ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease).
- Treats ulcerative proctitis (inflammation of the mucosa of rectum) in affected individuals.
HOW MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES WORKS
MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES works by suppressing the production of prostaglandins (chemical messengers responsible for inflammation in the intestines) which results in reduced inflammation and ulceration thus providing relief from ulcerative proctitis and colitis in affected individuals.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Insert MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES as advised by your physician. It is for rectal use only. Empty your bowels before insertion. Put a protector on the finger and remove the suppository from the blister. Moisten the suppository with water and insert it gently and fully into the anus by lying down on one side and raising the other knee. Remain still for a few minutes to help keep the suppository in place. Dispose of the empty blister and use a finger protector and wash your hands. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES
COMMON

RARE
- Signs of inflammation of heart (myocarditis/pericarditis) such as shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid/irregular heart beats
- Signs of inflammation of the pancreas such as back/stomach pain
- Dizziness
- Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity of your skin to sun and ultraviolet light).
Stop using MESACOL 1GM SUPPOSITORIES and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis associated with symptoms such as reddish non-elevated, target-like/circular patches on the trunk associated with central blisters, skin peeling, ulcers of eyes, nose, mouth, throat, and/or genitals
- Signs of allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing/wheeziness, itching, skin rashes, and/or swelling of the face/lips/throat
- Signs of blood disorder such as unexplained bleeding, bruising, skin rashes, fever, and/or sore throat
- Signs of kidney problems such as change in the colour/amount of produced urine produced
- Suddenly developed abdominal cramps/pain, fever, severe headache, and/or rash.
